What is OCR used for?
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a text recognition technology that can transform scanned files into searchable PDFs. It also helps in converting a scanned document into an editable office format document, while preserving the file content's integrity.
How does it work?
The OCR tool translates the recognised shapes and patterns into a machine-readable text and creates an invisible text layer. This preserves the original file's appearance, but allows user to search, highlight, copy and select text.
Tip: Ensure that your file is predominantly readable text with a clear background.
Here's how to make scans searchable with OCR
1. Open MobiPDF. Tap Scan to PDF.
2. Scan your document.
3. Once scanned, tap Make Searchable. This feature should be always on by default unless you have previously turned it off.
4. Tap the Save icon and the app will start recognizing the text.
5. Save your file.
6. Newly saved file will open. It is now searchable. Tap Search from the menu and type your keyword.
7. Tap To Text if you would like to export the information from your PDF file into .txt format.
8. Select Share Text, Copy Text, or Export to TXT.
9. You can now open the file with MobiOffice.
Make an existing PDF file searchable:
1. Open a PDF file from your device.
2. Tap on the Menu icon and then on Recognize text.
3. Tap To Text if you would like to export the information from your PDF file into .txt format.
4. Select Share Text, Copy Text, or Export to TXT.
5. Tap Make Searchable.

Limitations
While OCR is a powerful tool, not all documents are suitable to be OCR
processed. Some limitations include:
- some elements might not be available for editing
- difficulties processing files with complex backgrounds
- might require human finish/touch-up after conversion
- easily affected by the quality of the scan
